    I would really like to see how they installed this.

    As far as I know, a web page can't save and install files, so how does the adware get installed in the first place. Does it trick the user into running an app? If so, then I wouldn't consider that a security hole.

    I think it's just a mistranslation of the speaker's first language.

    So he attends at university since fall (so since september) and studies Commerce. Yet he thinks this rumor is part of a leaked advertisement and cannot comprehend why it is advertised like that.

    Well, that's what I get from it anyways...

    Did anyone catch the Chuck Lorre Productions "vanity card" at the very end of this week's episode? I usually don't pay attention to the show, but I do watch Mike & Molly right afterward. I briefly saw Charlie Sheen's name on it, and had my wife rewind and pause it on the DVR.

    In it, Chuck Lorre did a little joke at the whole situation, something along the lines of "I don't drink or smoke, I eat right, I exercise....", and at the very end, "If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I'm going to be really pissed."

    Quite possibly the first time I ROFL'd at that show.

    why do people believe this is possible? Apple will not allow one carrier to undersell the other on the SAME DEVICE...just won't happen it's bad for sales...which is why there is no competition between AT&T and Verizon...similar plans on voice text and data...otherwise everyone would play carrier swap every few month to get the best deal...if Tmobile gets the iPhone while still independent from AT&T you better believe you won't get unlimited everything for 70 bucks

    Why wouldn't it be possible? Apple in no way dictates the plan pricing, just the hardware pricing. (although I believe they have fought for better data pricing, and mostly been ignored by ATT on that) Tmob is clearly cheaper in most standard calling plans. Data is the same price, more or less (the GB limits can differ), across all carriers, so that's not in question. Text plans are pretty similar, too. It's the phone plans that differ.

    For instance, the base family plan from Tmob is $50, $60 from ATT and Verizon.

    Not to mention that Sprint does offer unlimited everything for a single line for $70. That is for any smartphone, some of which cost more than the iPhone, so why would the iPhone change that part of the pricing?

    I really want to see an LTE iPhone in 2012. I recently bought a Droid X on a 1 year contract because I wanted a phone with a large screen (and the iPhone 4 has a pretty small screen for today's phones). When my 1 year contract is up, I will look at all the smartphone offerings available at that time and make a decision on what to get next. I want Apple to make the short list but if there is no LTE iPhone, I will find it really hard to want to lock myself into 2 years with last generation technology.

    Are there any hard drives that can even unleash 1.25 GBps? :)

    Not yet, but assuming that there won't be within a reasonable timeframe seems silly. Why on earth would you want a new standard that we're going to have to live with for the next 10-20 yrs that has its bandwidth saturated almost on day of release? Also, I think that looking at this as *just* another way of connecting external drives is to be massively missing the big picture with Thunderbolt. Finally, Thunderbolt is capable of much more than 1.25GBps. I believe in theory it can eventually scale to 100Gbps over optical.

    Good sign, maybe I'll be able to buy a consumer external hard drive with Thunderbolt by fall.

    This is more than evident, since TB devices will just start to trickle with the millions and millions of MBP and future iMac users out there. TB is THE future of I/O, especially given Intel's explicit endorsement - USB 3.0 is dead meat in comparison.

    I am gonna buy the new iMac with TB, and hope to get an external TB HD by May at the latest.

    Could someone clarify this for me: Aren't hard drives too slow to make use of Thunderbolt anyway? In a typical USB 2.0 external hard drive, what is the bottleneck in speed: The speed at which the hard drive spins, or the USB 2.0 connection? If it's the USB, then why do people even care about the RPM of a drive? If it's the RPM, then isn't USB 2.0 fast enough to run a hard drive at its native speed?

    No, not with SandForce SSDs getting in the mainstream market now - with their 6Gb/s speeds (and more to come in the near future), they will easily justify the use of TB...

    Which reminds me. Every time I've bought an OS upgrade ( for as long as I can remember - probably back to OS 7 ) there has been a set of coupons included to prove that I purchased it. Has there ever been a scheme where customers actually get something in exchange for those coupons ?

    I believe there was a coupon upgrade program for 10.0 to 10.1. It was a "free" upgrade that cost $19.95 if you ordered the CD from the online store, but there were some copies available free of charge at some retail locations (this was pre-brick and mortar Apple Stores) like CompUSA and Fry's while supplies lasted. Many retailers didn't require proof of 10.0 ownership as the 10.1 was upgrade-only and thus useless to people who didn't have 10.0 installed already, but some asked for proof of purchase for 10.0. The coupon generally satisfied that requirement (as would a sales receipt).

    Come on, almost the entire show takes place inside his fake house, so that couldn't cost much. And as the show is pretty much about his life, the script writes itself. ;)

    I think he just gave the show another 3 years worth of material. The man has poetry and magic at his fingertips!

    $1000 worth of a beating he'd get if i were his parent. Luckily for kids, i hate them and would never have one. Ever.

    Going out on a limb here, but I am guessing this is not going to be an issue. Now go upstairs because your mom just finished cooking the brisket.

    Those iPhones in the photo are the exact same size, just a simple case of forced perspective. The White iPhone is tilted ever so slightly to give the illusion of increased size.

    Consolidating some replies here...

    How about if inspector sections could be 'torn off' and moved or docked below like in photoshop? There are certainly 2 or 3 sections that I would like open all the time.<snip>

    Why not just use more than one inspector? Pages allows you to add more inspectors to your screen anytime you want (up to a maximum of 8). If you've got the screen real-estate, why not just have an inspector for each panel that you're hitting all the time. I usually have at least two open...

    <snip>
    Grammer checker (dubious value in my opinion)
    indexing
    Better mathematical notation input
    Table of Contents is not bad but could have some additional features.
    better cross referencing
    <snip>

    I agree on all counts. I use MathType for my equations, and while I can relatively easily cut and paste them in, there are often text baseline issues, and it just plain isn't that elegant. AppleWorks had nice hooks into MathType or Equation Editor. Double click on an equation and it would pop up in the editor, and so on.

    Apple never intended for iWork to compete with MS Office. Apple merely wanted to fill a niche for those AppleWorks users who didn't need a full blown behemoth Office Suite like MS Office.

    It is only the die-hard Apple users that detest MS Office who are suggesting that iWork is a replacement for MS Office.

    Well, now that depends, doesn't it. What percentage of users (consumer or professional) do you suppose actually use the features that set MS Word apart from Pages? I bet you it's pretty small. So, for all of the rest, then Pages is a competitor for MS Word. And that pool includes a lot of professionals as well as consumers. You said it, yourself. It's for users that don't need a behemoth office suite.

    I have been using Pages and Keynote since Day One. Pages One was almost worthless in my book. Apple should have given away Pages v2 to those who suffered through version 1. Keynote was interesting and useful from version one but still lags significantly behind PowerPoint.

    Okay, I'm curious, how is it that Keynote lags significantly behind PowerPoint? I started using Keynote with version 1, and I was able to do things with it that colleagues couldn't get close to with PowerPoint. Now, I'll grant that there are some things that PowerPoint does that Keynote is still either not good at or simply can't do, but the same can be said in the other direction. So, from my perspective, Keynote and PowerPoint have been on a nearly equal footing for some time. Yet you think PowerPoint is significantly ahead of Keynote? Please explain...

    <snip>
    I realize that some people will be more content with a consumer version and will recommend it as a replacement. But that still doesn't give it the same functionality of the Professional app.

    Yeah, as others have said, let's be careful with labels. Just because I don't have $25,000 invested in camera equipment does that mean that I'm not a "professional" photographer? Or, if I wrote a book using an iBook instead of a "professional" computer like a PowerBook or a PowerMac or (gulp) a PC, does that mean that I'm not a professional author? I could go on, but my point is simple. Programs are tools, just like computers, cameras, etc. The tool is never what makes a professional. The person using it is.

    Now, that said, there are some professionals who need some of the tools that MS Office gives them, and they can't do their job without them. Great. Use MS Office. More power to them. But there are a lot of professionals who don't, and for them iWork can be a perfectly functional professional application. And, I think what some others have been trying to say is that it might even be a better application.

    Apple bought OS X too. :D

    I'm arguing that both were massive undertakings by both parties. My OS X example was tainted with sarcasm if you didn't catch the little :rolleyes: there.

    Both OS X and Chrome OS (and Android, and iOS) borrow heavily from others, either through acquisitions or from the open source community. To claim Google is any inferior here is just trying to stir the pot, especially calling the poster Troll, that is just insulting and uncalled for.

    Both companies deserve props from providing the software they do, neither deserves scorn that some posters here like to dish out.

    So what ? OS X is Mach/XNU, Apple didn't make that. It's also a GNU/Berkeley userland, Apple didn't make that either. Again guys, drop the non-sense competition, this thread is about a release of OS X, not some type of Google bashing contest.

    Clarifications:
    XNU is post 1996 merger. Mach pre merger was 2.9. Post merger is a mix of Mach 3.x with XNU and FreeBSD, plus Apple's own advances.

    Everyone who worked on OS X at Apple in Core Engineering was a merging of NeXT Engineering with some Apple Engineers and future talent. Apple bought NeXT for the IP, Code Bases, Tools, Engineering Talent and Leadership.

    BSD is not GNU.
