MACC 2011 Community Partnership Finalist — Springfield College, the Elias Brookings School and the William N. DeBerry School « MACC Blog

About the partnership:

Now in its 17th year, the Springfield College Partners Program has provided one-to-one mentoring for over 600 children from two neighborhood elementary schools. The children and the college students have benefited greatly from the educational and social aspects of the after-school program. The activities take place on the College's campus, with participants engaged in tutoring, teambuilding, self-exploration, anti-bullying, and recreational activities. Each college student is able to work with one child for a time span ranging from eight months up to three years. Through the structured mentoring setting, college students learn about children from different cultures and backgrounds than their own while the children gain caring, positive role models in their lives.

The College and elementary school partners work together to help youth improve academically and socially while increasing awareness of college accessibility. Week to week, year to year, the Partners Program continues to improve and enhance the collaboration among the College and the schools to support the needs of our community's low-income children.
