I like what you have going on here. Great detail on the girl / hair too, bokeh is pleasing and vibrant. Epic shoot locale. Tell her to stand up straighter next time and I think it would be flawless. Fill light could go one notch down too.

I love this photo you know. Very good color harmony with the dress too!

By the way - openstep is an evolution of nextstep when next went "open source". it may of been put of the GNU license,

Stop it please, you're hurting me... OpenStep is a specification of which GNUStep is a GPL licensed implementation released by the GNU project. Foundation and Cocoa are the NeXTSTEP acquired implementations that Apple is using.

OpenSTEP is not licensed under a GNU project license at all...

Lastly, the Minix kernel came from Posix. So the path Posix->Minix->Linux is valid.

POSIX is not a kernel. It's a standard programming interface that UNIX systems used to make sure that one program written for a UNIX system would compile another as long as the standard was followed.

Minix, while being a POSIX compliant OS, was a complete implementation done by Andrew Tannenbaum for a book he was writing.

Your grasp of all of this history is quite muddied. Seriously, who are you trying to convince here ? You've gotten about every fact wrong about this whole thing. The plain fact remains, I was right all along, your correction was quite wrong when you said :

Bash is under the GPL license - not GNU. Never has been GNU see source link -> http://www.opensource.apple.com/release/mac-os-x-106/

BTW - No part of MacOSX is distributed under GNU licensing...

You completely misunderstood my post when I said Bash was part of the GNU project. Bash has always been GNU, always will be. The GPL is very much "GNU licensing".

Enjoy easter yourself and use the days off to work on your grasp of the whole UNIX and open source histories.

    GNU evolved into a foundation

    From GNU.org (http://www.gnu.org/) :

The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop the GNU operating system, a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software—software which respects your freedom.

Again, the Foundation is called the FSF, from their site, FSF.org (http://www.fsf.org/) :

    What we do :
    ...
We drive development of the GNU operating system and maintain a list of high-priority free software projects to promote replacements for common proprietary applications.

Stop getting it wrong, we're on the Internet, the sites are there to correct you.

I'm just curious if the projected combined CMA / HSPA chips to be included in the iPhone would support HSPA+? That would at least give us some extra speed for iPhone 5. I don't think the current AT&T iPhone 4 does support HSPA+ - unless I'm mistaken.

    On Anandtech (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3475)

Apple has submitted a filing with the FCC for the Bluetooth version of its single-button right-clickable mouse, the Mighty Mouse. The new mouse will be exactly the same as the current Mighty Mouse except for its wireless feature. The mouse comes with a single button that does both left-click and right-click duties. One omni-directional pointing ball in the middle allows you to scroll in any direction.

The new Mighty Mouse uses two standard AA batteries and will be compatible with OS X 10.4.6 and later. Some users reported that the Mighty Mouse had some issues with right clicking, and often times the single fat button would click both sides of the mouse. It is unclear whether or not this has been addressed.

No release date is set for the new Bluetooth Mighty Mouse -- currently codenamed M6, but judging from the FCC filing, the new mouse should arrive soon.

You sound like I am against it.

Yes. You sounded like one. But apologies if you weren't.

In my opinion, dashboard is coming with iOS 5.0.

Apple did incorporate dashboard in iPhone OS 1.0 with the first iPhone but due to issues with performance they had to remove it.

This can be verified by debugging and going through iPhoneOS 1.0; navigating to /Library/Widgets folder. It was empty though.

Personalization is good. But the way its done on Android is ridiculous.
+ Widgets should always be sandboxed, the way they are in Dashboard.
[Both Google & MS failed to understand that btw]

I think personalization is good till the time it hinders the brand and brand quality. Folders/Wallpaper[:p] were one way to achieve that. There 'might' be more in the future but I highly doubt that.

All I can vouch for is that dashboard is coming in iOS 5.0.

Personalization in its entirety? Never in iOS 5.0.

    [QUOTE=stevegmu;4858043]
"Do you even have any idea when the last time the US was on the Gold Standard?"

1971 Nixon stated that gold could no longer be traded in for currency. It was the last step which ended the real value of money. Money is NOT, backed by gold, or any other precious metal but is instead, backed by faith. The money is, in other words, as good as people believe it is good.

"If 100% of our income tax pays off the interest on the Debt, how then does the government operate?"

The government operates through property taxes, state taxes, education tax, toll booths -which are owned by foreign countries - this supports our infrastructure. The federal government uses 100% of our tax to pay interest to banks on money which is loaned... hence our astronomical debt. Most people believe that the Federal Reserve is owned and operated by the Government. In actuality European Banks own the federal reserve thanks to Roosevelt and any money that is printed is not controlled by the American Government. We borrow money to fund our wars, run our military, pay our politicians and then we the tax our citizens to pay the interest on the borrowed money. JFK tried to abolish the Federal Reserve and failed and now Ron Paul is calling for the same action.

"Most people have taken out equity loans and maxed out their credit? Please."
Take a look what is happening in Nevada and Detroit... A lot of people cannot afford the American lifestyle and the average middle class American would be living on the streets in 3-6 months of loosing their jobs as most barely have enough in their banks saved to live off of.

"America is still a manufacturing giant. Our exports to China were up 21% last quarter."

Ironically just like apple most companies have their products made in China, India, or Mexico and then import them/assemble and then export the goods. The united States does not have natural resource assets such as Canada and as our dollar decreases in value the further in the whole we get with our national debt.... which by the way surpasses the entire combined debt of every other country in the world.

"There are more middle class Americans today than in any other point in history."

Middle Class with little to no savings and astronomical debt. In 1961 the average cost of a house was 18,000 while the average middle class income was 12,000. The average new vehicle cost 2,000. About two years the average price of a new home was 275,000 and the average price of a new vehicle was 24,000 while the average income was around 32,000. Yes these averages are subjective, but it gives you an idea of where we are when we lost gold as a standard.... currency then becomes controlled by banks through interest which results in inflation.

"Why do you think a weak dollar is bad?" Sure, there may be some inflation, however, a weak dollar is good for exports and tourism. Take a look at Boeing vs. Airbus, as it relates to the devaluation of the dollar. There's a reason China artificially keeps their currency devalued."

A weak dollar is bad because other countries realize the amount of debt we have. Our President spent more money in the first half of his term than all presidents combined. This money was borrowed and we the tax payers are now accountable for it. Countries around the world are loosing faith in our dollar. Opec was greeted with several countries a few weeks ago demanding that oil stop being traded in US dollars. We are lucky that Saudia Arabia refused as this would have caused huge economic instability. Take a look at what happened to the Germans in WWW II when they over extended themselves... a loaf of bread was payed for with a wheel barrow full of coins. I am not preaching fear... it is simple common sense for the educated and the aware. The wise will be able to get rich when our market collapses others will be in line at the soup kitchen.

"Somehow, I doubt you have a dime invested in the market..."
I do not need to share my personal portfolio with you but you are right. I took all of my money out of stocks in November as I knew what was coming and what is to come. I am not going argue my point of view any further. Open your eyes to the world and wake up - do some research beyond Fox News!

    Cases?

    CASES?

WTF ... who uses cases? And who cares for cases?

If I look at people with their iphones, i see like less than 5% using anything on their phones. And all of them use the Apple bumper on some iphone 4. I've seen hundreds of iphones in the wild, but I still have to see one non-bumper case in the wild.

    Grow up guys ...

P.S.: WTF does one use a case for? To make the phone THICKER? UGLIER?

Of course, and I meant that in the 'general sense'. I have long since abandoned the use of Classic on any of my OS X Macs or any of the Macs I support. AppleTalk is so deprecated that I can hardly believe that anyone will be able to use it much longer. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if it was completely absent from 10.5.

Yeah I don't use classic on my OS X systems at all. I am actually referring to enabling it for network communication with my Quadra 840av, LC 575, and other older systems that I boot into system 7 or even OS 8. Granted the need for Appletalk in those situations can be substituted for TCP/IP, AT appears to be more stable with those older systems.

Which makes it even MORE odd that it's enabled by default in MacTels, which don't run Classic.

I just checked my MacBook, and found that it too is enabled! Strange indeed!

    For Christmas:
A TV which is 3D capable, LED backlighted, full HD, 47 inch to 55 inch and a HDMI port, which is pretty much a standard, for my PS3; that acts as a 3D blu ray player and a great, better than the xbox, games console. I haven't decided which one, yet.

    http://www.simplyelectricals.co.uk/media/catalog/product/c/7/c7000.jpg

And an Apple TV, for all the Airplay goodness, via my iPod Touch.

    http://www.shoppingblog.com/pics/apple_tv_2010_2.jpg

For my Birthday (things that I wanted for christmas, but waiting for the next generation.)

iPad 2; hopefully, with a gyro, front and rear facing cameras, a "better display" - not retina, 512mb of RAM, 128gb of SSD goodness and a faster processor.

    http://touchreviews.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/ipad-2-update.jpg

    27 inch iMac.

I have been saving up, for years. Christmas 2010 - my birthday, is the "spend it all six months," for me.

Oh, and I want to meet the REAL Santa.

There is a difference between sales and market share. Without a doubt, part of the appeal of android is cost - it's just cheaper to buy. However, it's not as simple as you suggest

Some people buy it so they can have a larger screen, some because they want a keyboard, some because they have specific hardware needs (e.g. The US Army), some because they do not want to live under of the heel of Steve Jobs twisted moral code. I could go on, but it's become the proverbial dead horse. Sure, Android has pitfalls in that it can run almost anything, but I would rather have the freedom to make a bad app choice than to live in the walled garden that iOS is becoming.

In short, the freedom to make choices, even bad ones, is superior to being spoon fed like a baby as Apple tends to do.

Then too each their own. Obviously, you don't care for Apple's way of doing it and we could argue the pluses and minuses, but I don't think Apple's way is the wrong way. It's different and seems to be working fairly well too given they are company to beat in many categories right now. And as much as you love all the freedom with the Android based phones, I also think that is one of their problems. But again, we could debate forever.

Either way, you consistently feel your point of view is the only point of view. I don't feel "spoon fed like a baby" by using the iPhone. It does everything I want a smart phone to do plus some and there seems to be a ton of consumers out there that agree.

You know, you'd be much more respected here on this forum if you'd stop with the back-handed comments and ridiculous statements. Nothing wrong with having an opinion, but you can do it in a constructive manner and not a childish and shallow way. For someone that does seem to have some intelligence from time to time, you have a habit of totally destroying any credibility you might have.

Highly unlikely that Apple will release an actual tv. More probable are televsions from major manufacturers that have air play functionality built in.

    Agreed.

Why would anybody with limited know how about TV manufacturing go into that field?

USING somebody elses TV to display whatever makes much more sense.

I could see them coming in with a blockbuster smart projector device.

An "average" sustainable long distance pace (12km/h, about 8mph) will burn through about 1000 calories an hour. I suspect she's not running quite that much ;)

I seem to remember people out in the Arctic / Antartic tend to eat ~ 6000 calories a day, since so much is lost due to cold, etc. Maybe she lives in her fridge most of the day? (Which would explain the calorie intake too!) :)

    David

Traditionally the Eskimo's ate 6000 calories a day... mostly animal fat. They needed that much to survive a hunter gatherer lifestyle in a very cold climate.

    Jul 25, 04:32 PM
Well Apple is using Intel parts now that explains the lower quality. They're taking their parts from the same bin now; quality suffers...

    Oh... dear... lord...

The MBP's whine (arguably the biggest problem, barring heat) was caused by either: 1) the inverter for the LCD backlight, or 2) power regulation for the CPU, which (believe it or not) the G-series also required very similar parts. Neither of these components were designed or built by Intel. If you want to blame someone, blame Foxconn/Hon Hai/Asustek/whoever built the system. I'd probably put money on that company also having built PPC systems for Apple at some point.

The heat? Well, again, depending on who you believe regarding the cause, that's either dodgy thermal paste application (blame Asustek/whoever again), or... well, let's say that the Core line are rather toasty no matter who's using it.... but again, for the computing power, the Core is a great piece of work. Before the switch, there was zero chance of us having a laptop with this amount of computational power at *any* heat output.

Wonky 'eject' key on the MBP's? Asustek/whoever again.

The switch to Intel had zero bearing on quality control. QC's performed by the system builder.

Let's look back a bit through the mists of time...

Apple-designed logic boards. Were they somehow sprinkled with the magic fairy-dust of goodness? No. iBook and eMac failures?

    Apple-designed chipsets: sub-par USB2 performance, even on the G5.

    Apple-designed power systems: G5 chirping.

QC is a problem across the industry. Apple's used to be exemplary (many years ago... I'm talking Pismo/Wallstreet era). Now it's merely average or -- depending on the studies/surveys you believe -- slightly above-average.
