The Hindi movie “Aloo Chaat” directed by Robby Grewal and starring: Aftab Shivdasani, Aamna Shariff, Linda Arsenio, Sanjay Mishra, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Manoj Pahwa, Meenakshi and Dolly Ahluwalia in the main roles have funny sequences and witty dialogues and minimal music takes.

The plot is about a Punjabi boy Nikhil (Aftab Shivdasani) who returns from America and finds that his family is quite serious about getting him married. But he has a Muslim girlfriend, Aamna (Aamna Shariff), whom he wants to marry. But he is afraid that his family may reject his girlfriend. He devises a plan with the help of Hakeem Tarachand (Manoj Pahwa) a family-friend and sexologist to convince them about his relationship with Aamna. The story of this family film is centered around their plan.

Director Robby Grewal uses a simple storytelling style to evolve the story and sequences. While Aftab Shivdasani plays his part well Aamna Shariff makes a memorable debut with freshness and commendable performance. Kulbushan Kharbanda, the serious actor has done well in a comic role. Sanjay Mishra and Manoj Pahwa did their roles with average performance, while the American beauty and actress from Texas, Linda Arsenio is acceptable for her role. The designer and woman of many respectable professions, Dolly Ahluwalia presented a nice Punjabi granny.

Aloo Chaat is an average film, and worth seeing for those who like comedy oriented family drama.

Mallika Sherawat's Hisss - Preview

Hisss, aka ‘Nagin: The Snake Woman’, directed by Jennifer Lynch with Mallika Sherawat playing the lead role as Naagin, is slated for release on October 22, 2010 in India. Sherawat, who now lives in the United States, has been in India to promote the film. At the Cannes Film Festival, Mallika Sherawat promoted the film by posing with a giant African Rock Python (22 feet/ 6.7 meters long) python on the red carpet.

The film Hisss, produced by Govind Menon, Vikram Singh, Ratan Jain and William Sees Keenan, also features Irrfan Khan, Jeff Doucette and Divya Dutta. The film is edited by American film editor Tony Ciccone, and special effects designer Robert Kurtzman developed the look of the Snake Woman for Sherawat.

Mallika Sherawat makes her musical debut on the film's soundtrack alongside Julian Lennon, and Shruti Haasan sings and appears in a promotional video with music by Dave Kushner for the film.

The film was simultaneously shot in Hindi and English, and it will be released with other versions in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. A substantial part of the film was shot in the jungles of Kerala State in India, and the tribal leader of Thalikakal in Kerala, Mooppan Raghavan and several members of his tribe were recruited as extras for the film. The film was also shot in locations in Mumbai, Chennai, Madh Island, a near-shore island of Mumbai.

The story is about the curse of a Naagin, a shape-transforming Cobra Goddess, half-woman and half-snake, and if humans desecrate or violates it, they are doomed to suffer the curses of the snake woman with death and infertility.

The story depends on the civilizations that flourished in the Indus Valley, where the inhabitants sculpted the image of the shape-shifting snakes that were said to inhabit a mysterious temple far away deep within the jungles in the legendary spice forests of the Malabar Coast. And according to Hisss, from here the legend travelled across India, and the Far East along the silk route. In 2008, an American man George, packing high tech gear and evil intentions, traveled into this forbidden forest, here he captures a male cobra of the size of large python when he is at his weakest while mating. But George does not realize horror and destruction awaiting him.

Angels & Demons opens on May 15th

The Catholic Church (India) had previously demanded a ban on the movie, Angels & Demons, directed by Ron Howard and based on American author Dan Brown's novel, a sequel to the HIT movie The Da Vinci Code, but now they have consented to the release of the movie if the Censor Board (India) cuts some scenes includes a disclaimer in the movie. The Catholic Church opposed the distorted and anti-Church depictions in the movie, reports say.

Hollywood-Bollywood movie ventures

News is abuzz all around that there are going to be more and more Hollywood-Bollywood co-productions and cooperation to cash in on the increasing appeal of Bollywood in the overseas markets and as the Hollywood powerhouses of movie business faces less of box office success, maybe as an aftershock of the Great American financial fiasco after the great depression of the 30s.

Today’s most popular story for film buffs in the news is about Anil Ambani’s RBE (Reliance Big Entertainment) getting into a joint venture with Julia Roberts’ production house Red Om Films and director Brett Ratner’s Rat Entertainment. Ratner has directed films like Red Dragon (2002), X-Men: The Last Stand (2002), Rush Hour 2 (2000) and Rush Hour 3 (2007). Julia Roberts recently visited India, and the photo above is a picture of her in front of the Taj Mahal.

Anil Ambani’s RBE has earlier established creative partnerships with Hollywood bigwigs like Nicolas Cage’s Saturn Productions, Jim Carrey’s JC3 Entertainment and George Clooney’s Smokehouse Productions.

Recently Warner Bros. Pictures' first Bollywood film, also the first Bollywood film to be shot in China, Chandni Chowk to China, directed by Nikhil Advani and starring Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone (in lead double roles - a Chinese woman and an Indian woman) written by Sridhar Raghavan was released.

The film, 50% of which was based on the real life story of Akshay Kumar who worked as a cook in Bangkok before making it big in Bollywood, had all the box office masala ingredients like the hutongs of Beijing, the electric energy of Shanghai, breathtaking Chinese landscapes and the crazy world of megalomaniac villains, femme fatales, crazy inventors, Chinese mysticism and outlandish kung-fu assassins. Still it could not please the Box Office Gods, may be because it lacked the gripping human story of Slumdog Millionaire, or the technical, dictatorial and all other film-making brilliance associated with Slumdog Millionaire.

It is rumored that more and more Holly-Bolly ventures are on the pipeline, as film production and shooting in India are much cheaper and India has a huge wealth of untapped talent of actors, technicians and others, apart from the fact that India is a big market for movies and other entertainment-related products. It is noteworthy that even Britney Spears had Bollywood style choreography for one of her songs scheduled for her latest concert tour.
